SamulnoriisatypeofKoreanpercussionmusicthathasbeengainingpopularity
overthelastfewdecades,bothinKoreaandabroad.Theterm“samulnori”(????)
canbebrokenintotwoparts-“samul”meaning“fourthings”,and“nori”meaning
“toplay”.

TheSamulnoriensemblegenerallyconsistsoffourmaininstruments:Puk,Janngu,
JingandK'Kwaenggwari.Inaminimalensembletherewillbejustoneofeach,but
youwillalsosometimesseelargergroupswithfourormoreofeachinstrument.
However,evenintheselargergroups,theroleofeachinstrumentisthesame.
Eachonerepresentsanelementofnature,theJingbeingthewind,theJangguthe
rain,thePuktheclouds,andtheK’kwaenggwarithelightning.

Samulnorihasit’srootsinfarmer’smusic(nong-ak),andincludesnotonlymusic
butdancingtocelebrateharvesttimes.Themusicalsostemsfromtheshamanistic
traditionofutdaripungmul,whichisperformedonthesesameinstrumentstogether
withsingingandwindinstruments.Init’smodernincarnation,samulnorirelies
solelyonthefourinstrumentsbelow,eitherinquartetorlargerensemble.
